Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, has disclosed that Carlos Sainz’s father was the one who informed him that Lewis Hamilton was joining Ferrari. According to Wolff, this information was communicated to him in the days prior to the seven-time world champion himself revealing the shocking news.

In a transfer development that completely stunned Formula One back in February, Hamilton activated a break clause in his then-new two-year Mercedes deal in order to sign with Ferrari for the following year. This move will result in the Briton replacing Sainz in the Scuderia’s lineup beginning in January.

Although Wolff stated at the time that he had “heard the rumours a couple of days earlier” about the news, Hamilton was the one who actually informed him about it during their typical start-of-year get-together at his house over breakfast.After a period of nine months, Wolff has finally disclosed the origin of those rumours, stating that Carlos Sainz Snr, a two-time World Rally champion, was the particular source of the information.

“I heard the bells ringing two weeks before,” Wolff said in an interview for The High Performance Podcast.
