The prediction that Serena Williams will break a major record “soon” comes from Steffi Graf.
According to Steffi Graf, she is confident that Serena Williams will surpass her record of 22 major singles victories during the Open era, and she is adamant that she will be thrilled for the American when this occurs. Read more about tennis here.
Williams, who has won 21 Grand Slam singles championships, was unable to tie the record at the Australian Open in January when she was defeated by Graf’s fellow German Angelique Kerber in the final. This decision prevented Williams from tying the record, which has stood for some time.
In spite of this, Graf anticipates Williams to make a triumphant return this year.
In an interview with AFP, Graf stated, “I am absolutely certain that she will (not only break the record),” “To be honest I think we all believe that she can, and that she will soon.”
In spite of the fact that she had been overtaken by Williams, the 46-year-old tennis player, who had dominated women’s tennis from the late 1980s to the end of the 1990s, vowed that she would not be left with any lingering disappointment.
With a chuckle, she asked, “Have I accepted it?” Graf, who is now a mother of two and lives in Las Vegas with her husband Andre Agassi and their two children, stated, “I gave everything I had to tennis, and I feel great about what I have accomplished.”
“Although I do follow it to some extent, I am happy for the opportunity that has been presented to someone else. It does not in any way diminish the accomplishments that I have accomplished. I have no concerns whatsoever.”
In 1988, Graf accomplished a remarkable Grand Slam in the calendar year, winning all four major titles and adding a gold medal from the Seoul Olympics for good measure. Overall, his accomplishments were quite remarkable.
On the other hand, the German acknowledged that Williams’ dexterity and strength were the driving forces behind the shift in women’s tennis.
Graf claimed, “Her serve is just the biggest stroke ever in women’s tennis,” referring to Williams, who she had only two encounters with at the end of her career in 1999. “Her serve is just the biggest stroke ever?”
There is nothing that has ever come close to having the same level of power as that. And merely to watch her athleticism, no one else in the sport has ever demonstrated that level of athleticism. I have high hopes that it will cause a large number of additional players to emerge who possess that kind of power and have the potential to make the breakthrough.
A game of finesse
Graf, on the other hand, does not have any concerns about the possibility that the power-hitters will put the shot-makers out of profit just yet.
“I see Simona Halep, who doesn’t quite have that physical strength but still shows incredible tennis,” she explained to reporters.
“If you take a look at Angelique Kerber, you will notice that she is not a particularly powerful physically. However, they make use of the court and employ a variety of shots, which leads me to believe that (finesse) is still a possibility.
When compared to the equipment that we used to utilize, it is obvious that you have different equipment now. At the same time, it is always evolving, which is exactly how the sport ought to be.
When Graf was speaking to AFP late on Tuesday, she declined to comment on Maria Sharapova’s failing drug test. Graf was in Tokyo to promote a junior tournament that was being run by Roland Garros. Williams has lauded the “courage” of the Russian player, who may be subject to a lengthy suspension by the organization.
Graf, on the other hand, predicted that Kerber would go on to win additional major slams after her victory in Melbourne.
“I’ve watched and followed her, I’ve practised with her over the years a little bit,” she stated in response.
