The ‘naive’ decision of Manchester United to withdraw from the FA Cup The ultimate goal, according to Amorim, is to win the Premier League.

Fulham defeated Manchester United on penalties on Sunday, causing Manchester United to be eliminated from the FA Cup competition.

However, rather than lamenting the most recent setback in a terrible season, United coach Ruben Amorim claimed that his sights were set on a more significant trophy.

“The objective is to finish first in the Premier League. In light of the fact that we are now losing games and trophies during this season, Amorim stated, “The objective is to win the Premier League once more.” This statement was made after the team suffered a 4-3 shootout defeat at Old Trafford. It’s impossible for me to say how much longer it will take. But we intend to achieve that.

“If you think about it that way, we can suffer a little bit in these defeats — sometimes a lot — but we have a goal, so we continue, no matter what, we continue forward,” the speaker said.

United, who were the current holders of the cup, were eliminated in the fifth round after both Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee had their penalty kicks saved after the game ended 1-1 after extra time were played.

Bernd Leno, the custodian for Fulham, was the hero of the moment as he made the key saves that allowed Fulham to advance to the quarterfinals against Crystal Palace.

Although Fulham had taken the lead with a header from Calvin Bassey shortly before halftime, it was Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser in the second half that ultimately forced the game to go into extra time. However, this only served as a momentary reprieve for United, as the club now has only one prize to compete for during this season, and that is the Europa League.

Knockout blow (KO)
In spite of Amorim’s aspirations, it appears like the next Premier League title is still quite a ways off. The last time United won the Premier League was during the 2012–2013 season. It appears quite improbable that his club would finish in the top half of the standings this season, since they are now in 14th place in the standings.

Even though he took over as head coach in November, the Portuguese coach has already had a rough start to his tenure.

Knockout rounds had been a rare source of optimism, and now that Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea had all been eliminated from the FA Cup, the door was opening for Manchester United to successfully defend the trophy it had won in May of previous year.

However, the 13-time winner did not pose much of a threat throughout the first half, which finished with certain sections of the home support jeering when Bassey headed Fulham in front from close range by heading the ball.

With a low, first-time strike from inside the box in the 71st minute, United captain Fernandes fired the home squad into life and brought them to a new level of participation.

After that, United had opportunities to win. While Alejandro Garnacho went through on goal in extra time, Leno was able to prevent him from scoring. Additionally, Leno was able to block another attempt from Chido Obi in extra time before he performed his heroics in the shootout.

After the match, Fulham coach Marco Silva stated, “I am aware that they had opportunities, but I believe that we were the best team on the pitch.” Our squad was on the ball and completely in control of the ball. We are deserving of being in the subsequent step.

The battle between Ruben and Roo
Amorim’s statements about his desire to win the title from Manchester United were criticised by Wayne Rooney, the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

“It’s a little bit naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because, from where they are now, they’re a long way off that,” the BBC analyst added. “We’re looking to win the Premier League.”

In the course of Amorim’s post-match news conference, Rooney’s comments were presented to him. The Portuguese coach was questioned about whether or not it was feasible to discuss the possibility of winning the championship.

Amorim stated, “That is the goal right there.” One definition of naivety is the belief that we are going to achieve our goal this season or that we are going to be the most formidable challenger for the following season.

A victorious Welbeck
In the match against Newcastle, Danny Welbeck scored the game-winning goal in extra time, propelling Brighton into the round of eight.

Welbeck, who has won the celebrated trophy twice with Arsenal, came off the bench to help seal a 2-1 victory at St. James’ Park. Welbeck is a two-time winner of the trophy.

In the following round, Brighton will go up against either Nottingham Forest or Ipswich.

During the 114th minute of the match, Welbeck executed a superb finish to lift the ball past Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka from a narrow angle. The match was tied at 1-1 and appeared to be heading into a penalty shootout. The former England attacker, who is now 34 years old, had timed his run precisely to avoid Newcastle’s offside trap and to meet Solly March’s throughball. In addition, he was able to pivot and shoot the ball into the back of the net despite the fact that he was moving away from the goal.

The penalty kick taken by Alexander Isak in the 22nd minute gave Newcastle a 1-0 lead, but Yankuba Minteh equalised the score in the 44th minute.

As the second half progressed, players from both teams were shown the red card: Anthony Gordon for Newcastle in the 83rd minute, and Tariq Lamptey in the extra time.

For the home team, Fabian Schar believed he had scored a late extra-time winner, but the video assistant referee (VAR) determined that he had been offside.

The goal scored by Welbeck ensured that Brighton won their sixth consecutive match across all competitions.

In the final of the English League Cup, which will take place later this month, Newcastle will face Liverpool in an attempt to bring an end to a seventy-year drought for a major domestic trophy. The club has the opportunity to accomplish this goal this season.

Draw for the quarterfinals
In the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, Manchester City, which has claimed the title of Premier League champion four times in a row, will be travelling to Bournemouth.

The second-tier Preston club plays host to Aston Villa.
