With the best-of-five finals, the WTA Finals had a special feature from 1984 to 1998 that made it hard for anyone but the best to win the last and most important title of the season. Three or four sets were enough to decide the winner in the first seven tournaments.

Tennis fans had to wait until 1990 to see a women’s five-setter match. It was the first one since 1901, and it happened when Elisabeth Moore beat Marion Jones in the US Open final, coming back from behind to win 4-6, 1-6, 9-7, 9-7, 6-3.

In 1989, Monica Seles, then 16 years old, made it to the final of the WTA Finals for the second time. She beat Gabriela Sabatini, the winner in 1988, 6–4, 5–7, 3–6, 6–4, 6–2 to become the youngest winner in the history of the event.

A very skilled Serb from Novi Sad became a major force that season, winning 54 of 60 matches and nine wins in total, including Rome, Roland Garros, and the WTA Finals. This was enough to finish as the world’s number one player.

2. Seles had to play her best to beat Sabatini on November 18 at the Virginia Slims Championships in Madison Square Garden. It took her three hours and 47 minutes to win the match and the title, which marked the end of a great season.

The match between two young girls who had just won their first Major earlier in the season was amazing. They played very differently, which kept the crowd on the edge of their seats for almost four hours.

Sets and time went by while they both refused to give up. They tried not to think about how tired they were and instead focused on the prestigious prize. In game three, Monica got off to a good start with a return winner, but Sabatini quickly broke back with a forehand down the line winner.

When Sabatini made a double mistake at 3-3, Seles took the lead again. This time, he made it official and moved ahead 5-3. In game nine, Gabriela had to work hard to stay in the set. She held after Monica had eight deuces and two set points. In the next game, Monica served for the first point.

She did it in style with a drive volley winner that gave her the set 6-4 and the first leg of this long match. With this energy, Monica broke at the start of the second set after another long game. She made Sabatini miss a return winner, giving Monica full control.

Still, Gabriela got back on track and was even after a break in game six thanks to another good move at the net. However, she lost serve at 4-4, which let Monica serve for the set. With no time to make a mistake, Sabatini broke back at the last second and hit another beautiful lob to tie the game at 5-5. She then had to win the set to stay in the game.

She held at love in game 11 and then made Monica make a mistake a few games later to get her second straight break and win the set.

In the third game of the third set, Seles had a chance to break, but she missed it. Sabatini then saved her serve with a smash winner at 3-3.

Monica missed her chances to take the lead, but Gabriela didn’t. At 4-3, she scored a break with another slice and a good lob to take the lead and serve for the set in the next game. It was over with an ace, and she was the clear favorite to win. With this win, she is now only one set away from the title.

Monica fought off two break points at the start of the fourth set, when she had no room for error. This gave her a boost, and she broke in game two with a cracking forehand down the line. Sabatini didn’t stay behind for long. In game five, after the young Yugoslav made a huge mistake, he took the lead back.

Again, Seles stepped in during game eight and gave her team a 5-3 lead when their opponent made a forehand mistake. Monica had everything she needed to win that game, but Sabatini broke back to cut the lead to 5-4 and make it look like she would win in four sets.

With 146 points for Sabatini and 145 for Seles, there wasn’t much between the two at that point. After the Argentine made a double error and her opponent broke, the younger player took the lead. She won the set 6-4 and forced a decider, which was the first fifth set in women’s tennis in 89 years!

So far, both players have scored seven beaks. In game two, Gabriela had a chance to score another one, but Seles stopped her. He won the game easily right after the serve to tie the score at 1-1.

She saved more energy for the end of the match, and Sabatini couldn’t keep up. In game four, she was broken after hitting a forehand, which was the first sign of her decline. Monica held at love in game five to take a 4-1 lead. She then hit a service winner to go ahead 5-2, leaving Sabatini to serve to stay in the match.

The Argentine had no more energy left, so he took another break, which let Seles finish off a great win with a crosscourt forehand winner. Monica wrapped up a great season in the best way possible, making it clear to her foes that she would be back for more in 1991.
