There were still many pop songs from up-and-coming artists on the charts in the early 1960s before The Rolling Stones and The Beatles upended everything.

‘Love Me Do’ was one of them, and Helen Shapiro had not one but two UK chart-topping songs in the year prior.

When the then-16-year-old Shapiro headlined 14 shows in early 1963, the Beatles were midway down the bill. She was so popular that the Fab Four even accompanied her on the tour.

Before the pop revolution upended everything and ended Helen’s chart-troubling days, she had a string of hit singles at the beginning of the decade.


Although it appeared that she might never be seen again, she was resurrected as a jazz and musical theatre star.
