Aston Villa captain John McGinn has had a disappointing international break with Scotland.

Following a last-minute loss to Poland in their first UEFA Nations League match, Scotland was defeated in Lisbon by a late Cristiano Ronaldo winner.

McGinn started in the middle of the park against Portugal and was replaced by Steve Clarke late on, with the Aston Villa midfielder earning mixed reviews for his effort.

McGinn’s performances in the Premier League have been called into doubt, despite Unai Emery’s team winning two of their first three games.

There is a sense that Villa’s captain lacks that spark in his game, which is exacerbated by the fact that he has had a very demanding year in football.

Villa will play Champions League games after the international break, so the 29-year-old will have little time to rest.

The Edinburgh News rated McGinn 5/10 for his effort against Portugal, who rallied from a goal down to win three points.

It was thought that McGinn’s attacking ability was weak, despite being pushed further up the pitch when wearing his country’s colours.
