Reason Man Utd did not sign Geovany Quenda ‘revealed’ as Sporting star agrees shock £42m Chelsea transfer

The sensation, who is only 17 years old, was once a student of Ruben Amorim, the manager of the Red Devils.

However, according to sources, Chelsea made a “secret blitz” in order to acquire the right winger, who is also capable of playing wing-back. This occurred after the player had waited for a while.

After being enthused by Enzo Maresca’s ambition for the West London giants, Quenda agreed to join the team after undergoing a medical examination in private.

But the Manchester Evening News has now disproved the rumours that he turned down the opportunity to play for United in favour of Chelsea. In November, United apparently participated in a meeting with Jorge Mendes, an influential agent, because his agency was assigned with the responsibility of negotiating on Quenda’s behalf.

However, the interest of United did not extend beyond the realm of casual discussions.

The preference of United was to wait to sign Quenda, according to a source who was aware with the contract negotiations. Quenda, who will turn 18 the following month, will remain with Sporting for the rest of the 2025-26 season before joining his new friends at Stamford Bridge in July of 2026 following his departure from Sporting.

The left-footer has already appeared in 35 matches for Sporting this season, including some of the most important games in the Champions League, but he has only scored once.

As a result of his connections to Amorim and the fact that he would be deemed an ideal fit on the right side of his former manager’s favoured 3-4-3 formation, it was anticipated that he would sign with Manchester United.

Quenda joined Sporting in 2019, when he was only 13 years old, and Amorim later joined the club the following year.

On the other hand, he will be joining Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, two other wonderkids who will be joining this summer, in West London.

The signing of Patrick Dorgu, a left-footed wide player at the same time, during the middle of the season also had an effect on the Red Devils’ interest.
