It has been more than five years since the last time the Penn State wrestling team was defeated in a dual match. After defeating No. 13 Illinois by a score of 29-9 on Sunday, the Penn State Nittany Lions went on to win their sixth consecutive Big Ten regular season dual championship. In addition, this victory marked the 70th consecutive dual victory for Penn State. Seven of the Nittany Lions’ matches were victories, and they earned bonus points in five of those matches. A number of Penn State wrestlers, including Luke Lilledahl (125 pounds), Shayne Van Ness (149), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Carter Starocci (184) and Josh Barr (197), were awarded bonus points for their performances. In the first bout of the dual, Lilledahl defeated Caelen Riley by way of a technical fall 19-3 in 4 minutes and 19 seconds. No. 14 Kannon Webster was defeated by Van Ness by a score of 15-4 in a major decision. Mesenbrink did not record a technical fall for the fourth time in this year, making it unusual for him to do so. Nevertheless, he maintained a perfect score for wins that resulted in bonus points. With a major decision score of 10-1, the wrestler ranked first in the country defeated Braeden Scoles, who was ranked fourteenth. To achieve victory over No. 12 Edmond Ruth, who is the younger brother of the legendary Ed Ruth of the Nittany Lions, Starocci had to take an unorthodox route to victory. A victory for disqualification was achieved as a result of Starocci’s persistent persuasion, as Edmond was summoned for an excessive number of stalls. The opponent that Barr faced was Zac Braunagel, who is ranked No. 17 in the USA and has qualified for the NCAA four times. The wrestler from Penn State had no problems, as evidenced by the fact that he won Braunagel by a score of 15 against 4. The Nittany Lions were able to provide their supporters with the opportunity to witness Joe Sealey (157) and Cole Mirasola (285), who were filling in for stars Tyler Kasak and Greg Kerkvliet, once again on the mat. Both were unsuccessful, but they demonstrated that significant achievements are on the horizon for the future.
