Ruben Amorim has responded to Wayne Rooney’s assertion that it would be “naive” to even begin discussing the possibility of Manchester United returning to their former glory in the Premier League given the current status of the club.

Fulham defeated Manchester United in a penalty shootout in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon. As a result, the only prize that Manchester United has a chance of winning this season is the Europa League.

The team is presently ranked fourteenth in the Premier League standings, and unless they are able to improve their position by the end of the season, the twenty-time champions of England are on track to have their poorest league campaign since they were brought down from the Premier League in 1974. The revered team that dominated the 1990s and 2000s, with United’s all-time top goalscorer Rooney, who ranked at no. 4 on FourFourTwo’s list of the best Premier League players of all time, claiming five league titles and a Champions League as part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last great side, has been steadily declining over the course of the past few decades.

Following United’s elimination from the cup competition, Rooney made the following statement on BBC One: “I think it’s Amorim reacted to Rooney’s comments, insisting of the club’s ambitions to win the Premier League title once more: ” That is the objective. If we were to believe that we are going to achieve our goal this season or that we are going to be the greatest competitor for the following season, we would be naive.

During this particular instant, I am aware that everyone is aware of everything. I am aware that it is really simple; I was a pundit when I left my playing career, so I am aware that it is very simple. The statement that they are aiming to win the Premier League is a little bit foolish because, given their current standing, they are a long way from achieving that goal.
