More than 35,000 Hot Dogs Later, Penn State Baseball Brings Back Dollar Dog Nights

With two victories in Puerto Rico to start the 2025 season, Penn State baseball defeated an SEC school for the first time in almost three decades. Additionally, supporters will be pleased to hear that dollar hot dogs will be returning when the Nittany Lions play their first home games in March.

This season, all Tuesday home games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will include $1 hot dogs as part of Penn State’s highly successful Dollar Dog Night program. Over the previous two seasons, Penn State has sold 35,117 hot dogs during the promotion. Last season, Penn State broke attendance and hot dog consumption records against Kent State (5,025) and 8,591, respectively. Free admission to Penn State home games allows supporters to spend more money on hot dogs.

Before hosting Indiana in the Big Ten opener on March 7, Penn State (2-1) has played ten away games this season. Six of Penn State’s 26 home games will be $1 hot dog Tuesdays. Penn State baseball fans may indulge in $1 hot dogs and see a squad with increasing recognition starting on March 11 versus Georgetown.

The Nittany Lions defeated Missouri 10-0 in their season opener in Puerto Rico thanks to three home runs and five scoreless innings from starting pitcher Mason Horwat. Penn State had not defeated an SEC team since defeating Alabama in March 1995. In the Puerto Rico tournament, the Nittany Lions won two of their three games.

Last season, the Nittany Lions had an incredible run to the Big Ten title game under first-year coach Mike Gambino, but they lost 2-1 to Nebraska in Omaha. Gambino stated following the game that he thought Penn State baseball would have “championships” in the future.

Last May, Gambino stated, “I told the team afterward, ‘There will be dogpiles,'” instead. “I think so. There will be titles and photographs on the wall. I think Penn State will return here for the main event as well as the Big Ten Tournament.

Since the previous season, Gambino has added some transfer talent, most notably a player who has won an NCAA title. This season, Paxton Kling, a freshman on LSU’s 2023 championship squad, joins the Nittany Lions. Originally from Altoona, the outfielder played alongside Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes at LSU. Kling’s record after three games with the Nittany Lions is.333/.583.

“It’s really cool to have a national championship because many people don’t get to experience that.” For a story on Penn State’s website, Kling said. “You just need to grind hard and keep your nose down.” A positive team dynamic is essential. That group felt really close to one another, and I feel the same way about this group at Penn State. Many men are in love with one another, which is quite significant since you know that the man behind you is looking out for you. The man on the mound has your back, you know that. While everyone is still in love with one another, everyone wants to go win and win [a national championship].

Baseball at Penn State resumes play on February 21 in Farmville, Virginia, for a four-game series against Longwood.
