Melissa Gilbert likens her TV father Michael Landon to Roseanne Barr, the TV mother of her sister Sara: “Calculate.”

Even at 60, Melissa Gilbert still considers herself fortunate to have avoided the pitfalls of child stardom. Little House on the Prairie, the family drama she starred in for nine seasons starting when she was ten, receives all the credit, according to her.

The Kelly Clarkson Show featured her saying, “Again, that’s part and parcel of Little House on the Prairie,” on Wednesday. “Michal Landon was my childhood companion. My sister also performs as a child actor, and we ask, ‘What’s On the NBC hit, Gilbert portrayed the bright young Laura Ingalls, who would become the real-life author Laura Ingalls Wilder. As she described her “larger-than-life surrogate father, Michael Landon,” in her 2010 book Prairie Tale: A Memoir, Gilbert has long been outspoken about her affection for him.

As she stated in November 2021, Costar Karen Grassle, who portrayed her mother, Caroline Ingalls, had a different viewpoint.


She told the New York Post, “Mike would say ‘c—‘ and make obscene jokes about how a woman smelled after sex.” I felt as though I had been frozen. However, I was so used to these insults as a woman working in the film industry in the 1970s that I never thought to chastise him harshly. I remained professional. On the NBC hit, Gilbert portrayed the bright young Laura Ingalls, who would go on to become the real-life author Laura Ingalls Wilder. “I’d be the good girl, play the part, and hope.” Michael Landon, the show’s executive producer and frequent writer and director, portrayed her parents as Charles Ingalls.
