Matthijs de Ligt scored his first goal for Manchester United against Southampton not long after Andre Onana saved a penalty at the other end.

Bruno Fernandes sent in a cross that De Ligt headed in for his first goal, and Onana stopped a penalty.

When United played Southampton at St. Mary’s, De Ligt opened the score by heading in a great cross from Fernandes. The ball bounced off of Aaron Ramsdale, the goalkeeper, and it was scored soon after Andre Onana saved Cameron Archer’s penalty kick, keeping the score even for United.

Even though Southampton had a lot of chances before they missed the penalty, they were behind 2-0 at break because Marcus Rashford scored again for the visitors. The winger, whose play has been getting worse lately, moved in from the left and hit a curling shot into the bottom corner.

Two teams from the League Cup will play each other on Tuesday at Old Trafford. Then, next weekend in the Premier League, they will play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
