Mariners announcer Dave Sims reportedly interviews for Yankees job

This season, the story of the New York Yankees radio booth reads like an episode of Succession, but without the bad language and hilariously terrible but somehow lovable people.

The trouble began when famous voice actor John Sterling quit all of a sudden not long after the season started. Sterling was filled in by a number of different announcers and characters during the rest of the long MLB season, from Craig Carton to Ricky Ricardo. Still, none of them have been given the job permanently. As it turns out, Sterling is coming back to call the Yankees this playoffs.

No one knows what will happen now, in 2025. But now there is a new name in the race. At least in an official sense.

NJ.com says that Dave Sims, who announces for the Seattle Mariners, has interviewed for the job. And while the team was in the Bronx this week, Sims was asked about the Yankees job but wouldn’t say anything.

At 71 years old, Sims wants to change jobs and work closer to home.

New York City is his home. That’s where he and his wife go when baseball season is over. He is also close to one of his kids and a grandchild.

It’s true what people said after someone calling themselves “Dr. Joe” called a WFAN talk show in June:

While Sims wants to stay with the Mariners, he wants to take over for John Sterling as the Yankees’ radio voice.

“We’ll see what happens,” Sims told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday before calling Root Sports’ 11–2 win over the Mariners. “I enjoy what I do here in Seattle.” New York is my home. That’s all I have to say.

News 12 NJ said that two sources said Sims has been interviewed to take Sterling’s full-time job. Sterling suddenly retired on April 15, 16 games into his 36th season with the Yankees.

Sims said, “I can’t say anything about that.”

A random WFAN caller brought up Sims’ name out of the blue as a possible Sterling replacement earlier this summer, citing his friendship with Suzyn Waldman. This seemed incredibly strange.

From what I’ve heard, a lot of things point to Sims possibly becoming the next radio voice for the New York Yankees. He knows people in the area, has experience, is skilled, and is friendly with Waldman, so the move will go very smoothly. It’s possible that Dave Sims has always been the team’s top target, which makes sense when you think about how the speakers change and Sterling’s return for the playoffs.
