As a means of finding a successor for Andre Onana, Manchester United is reportedly interested in acquiring Mike Maignan, a player who is now playing for AC Milan and belongs to the France national team.

In July 2023, Manchester United paid Inter Milan £47.2 million to acquire Onana. This came after the club allowed their previous custodian, David de Gea, to go on a free transfer move. The previous manager of United, Erik ten Hag, had the intention of reuniting with Onana, who had previously been a star player for Ajax. He believed that Onana would be the ideal custodian to assist United in playing out from the back.

However, despite the fact that Onana is significantly more skilled with his feet than De Gea, his performances have left a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, the Cameroonian has committed a number of errors that have resulted in goals, and as a consequence, Amorim has been seeking for a replacement number one player so soon.

Christopher Vivell, the new head of recruitment for Manchester United, is reportedly prepared to pursue Maignan this summer, as reported by Milan Live, an Italian news outlet.

According to rumours, Manchester United is planning to undertake a high-stakes “assault” in order to try to get the France international player to the Premier League.

In general, Maignan is considered to be one of the best shot-stoppers in the world, and Vivell believes that he is the answer to the problems that United is having with their custodian.

It has even been argued that Maignan’s departure from the most dominant team in Serie A is a “foregone conclusion” due to the circumstances surrounding his contract.

The contract of the 29-year-old player is set to end in June of 2026, and Milan is currently considering whether or not to initiate extension negotiations in the coming weeks.

The fact that Maignan is seeking to prove himself at the highest level, specifically the Premier League, makes it quite improbable that he will agree to new terms during this time. A major bone of contention for United is the fact that Maignan considers himself to be among the best players in the Champions League. Consequently, in order for United to be able to reach an agreement with him, they would have to persuade him that they will be able to enter the competition within the next two years.

Given that Amorim’s team is now ranked fourteenth on the table, this might prove to be a challenging task.
