Joshua Zirkzee breaks his silence following the disappointment of the FA Cup penalty shootout.
Joshua Zirkzee, the manager of Manchester United, has extended his apologies to the fans of the club subsequent to the team’s elimination from the FA Cup against Fulham on Sunday evening.
It was a shootout that was necessary to separate the teams after 120 minutes of action at Old Trafford, and it could only result in a 1-1 tie. United’s defence of the trophy that they lifted in a shocking manner at Wembley Stadium in May of last year went up in smoke from the penalty spot.
When Zirkzee came up to take his penalty kick, United’s prospects were already hanging by a thread. Fulham had a perfect penalty kick from 12 yards out, and United’s hopes were already in jeopardy. Due to the fact that Victor Lindelof had been unable to convert the previous kick, Zirkzee’s attempt, which Bernd Leno had been able to save, was critical in order to keep his team alive.
Oh, I’m sorry to disappoint you today, reds! Following the event, the Dutchman took to social media to directly address his followers and expressed his gratitude for the exceptional support they had shown.
Ever since Zirkzee moved to United from Bologna in the summer of last year, his relationship with the club’s supporters has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Back in August, when he made his debut in the Premier League, he scored the game-winning goal, which was ironically against Fulham. However, after that, he struggled to follow up that amazing start. After being chosen as the replacement to Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim’s first domestic home game was a resounding victory over Everton, which resulted in an amazing three-goal performance for United. Only four weeks later, however, he was booed by the Old Trafford crowd when he was taken out of the game during the first half of a loss to Newcastle.
Ever since that moment of absolute despair, there is a feeling that Zirkzee is finally beginning to find his footing in a United shirt.
Despite the fact that his physical stature suggests that he ought to be good at leading the line as a “number nine,” the 23-year-old has started each of the club’s previous four games as one half of the double “number 10” that is a characteristic of Amorim’s system. This is because he is not suited to leading the line as a result of his physical stature.
Zirkzee’s individual performances are showing signs of potential, and the slightly deeper role that he is playing is a better fit for his technical profile. The team as a whole is still having a difficult time.
