Joe Gomez to make Liverpool exit decision as Aston Villa eye last-minute transfer

According to Alan Hutton, Joe Gomez, a defender for Liverpool, will have to make a decision on his willingness to leave Anfield and compete for a position at Aston Villa

As Fulham looks to get Diego Carlos’ signature before the transfer window closes at the end of August, Unai Emery’s team has already started to think about possible substitutes for the Brazilian [David Ornstein, 9 August].

Due to interest from the Villans and many Premier League clubs, England international Gomez is considering his options and did not go with Arne Slot’s team for their match against Ipswich Town [The Times, August 17].

Hutton thinks the 27-year-old would be a valuable rotation option for Emery’s team, but he isn’t sure the Liverpool regular could consistently crack the starting lineup.

“There’s a lot of competition,” Hutton revealed to Villa News in an exclusive interview.

“I don’t really see him starting on a regular basis. I know he performed well under Jurgen Klopp as manager, but I’m not sure how things will work out for him going ahead.

To be honest, I think he would improve the team. He offers you an additional choice, particularly at fullback due to his versatility.

However, I don’t believe he enters at this point and begins playing immediately away, so it actually depends on the player.

“He probably wants to go somewhere where he’s going to play regularly, and I’m not sure that will be at Villa, if his future is not at Anfield.”

In light of reports linking Joe Gomez to Aston Villa, will he leave Liverpool?
With Tyrone Mings returned to provide some backup, Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres look to be Emery’s settled centre-back duo going into the upcoming Premier League season.

But there is a glaring lack of depth in defence, and that might become a problem during the season with Champions League football on the schedule and Carlos’ future in jeopardy.

Unai Emery, manager of Aston Villa.
In order to strengthen his Aston Villa defence before the transfer deadline, Unai Emery is eager.
Gomez would address that concern and provide Emery another choice at fullback, a position that he frequently switches up and juggles.

This seems like a great move for everyone involved if he is willing to leave Liverpool and join Villa Park, and if the two teams can agree on a fee for his services.

However, if Emery’s offer is the only one available, the England international is unlikely to leave Anfield for another rotation position.

In other Aston Villa news, the team intends to try to sign Samu Omorodion before the transfer deadline, subject to one condition.
