Jamie Carragher has dismissed the idea that Manchester City generates more revenue than any other football team as “absurd”.

The ex-Liverpool defender and football analyst was astonished by the notion that the Premier League titleholders had managed to produce greater revenue than both Manchester United and Real Madrid in recent years, despite their achievements. Carragher used Real Madrid’s 14 Champions League titles as evidence to counter the proposed significance of Manchester City’s success in Europe.

Manchester City achieved a historic milestone in the 2022/23 season by generating a remarkable income of £712.8 million. During this season, the team accomplished an extraordinary feat by winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup, securing their first-ever triple. They exceeded the division’s previous record of £648.4m, which was set by Manchester United for that season.

The city’s revenue rose to £613m while the club had a nearly twofold increase in profit, from £41.7m to £80.4m. That is in spite of a substantial rise in wages as an expenditure.
