Manchester United defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinal at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils winning after extra time with a goal from Amad Diallo. Liverpool had given up two leads in the match.

Cody Gakpo’s performance in Liverpool’s FA Cup loss to Manchester United was harshly criticized by Jamie Carragher, who said he ‘plays likes the game is in slow motion’.

After 77 minutes, the Dutch forward was brought on to replace Mo Salah; however, he did not make an adequate impression, and Antony had to send the game into extra time. Gakpo had little effect other than to pick out Alexis Mac Allister, who failed to convert his cross.

Erik ten Hag’s team won spectacularly thanks to the efforts of Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo, but the Reds were unable to hold out after Harvey Elliott gave them the lead once more. When Diallo took off his shirt to get a second yellow card, he saw red for his joy.

Carragher feels that Liverpool caused their own demise and specifically singled out Jurgen Klopp’s forward line—which goes beyond just Gakpo—for not living up to expectations. Even so, he acknowledged that the club’s attackers were having a rare off day.

“Unbelievable game & it’s a great result for Man United but Liverpool only have themselves to blame,” the former Liverpool defender said on X. scored three, but the attacking players were all of extremely low quality. They’ve been fantastic the entire season, so it’s hard to be upset. Bloody hell, football!”

Although he thought his team was nervous at times during the match, Klopp was happy with the second half, if not the outcome. The German coach cited his team’s struggles during certain moments as a result of the volume of football.

“Obviously today was on and above the edge, it was really tough for us with the 130 or whatever minutes,” he stated during his press conference. United scored the first goal, which was evidently the best start for them.

We needed to get a little bit better at organizing ourselves. We also had trouble man-marking, didn’t play enough, and experienced other issues. When we finally figured out how to play for the first time, we had rhythm, and everything looked fantastic. Then, we led 2-1 and it was entirely deserved. The second half that we played here was absolutely outstanding.

“However, we failed to win the match, and it is obvious that they will have opportunities if you leave the door open at Old Trafford, away from home. They can win it there if they can score the equalizer and Marcus’s big chance at the end of normal time. That’s evident, I see that. After that, things became extremely difficult for us. That is the way it is; that was the first time I truly saw my team having trouble. We have been playing football a lot lately.

“Then, we lead 3-2, everything is fine. They score 3-3, 4-3, after that. Come on, you can accept that with ease. Congrats to United as well; they put in a great deal of effort in their fight. It is what it is; you wish to advance to the semifinals. Everyone who watched the game today, in my opinion, saw two teams that recognized the significance of the event and the rivalry. We made every effort. Not to mention, we didn’t receive much for it today.”
