SWANS EYE HAWKS DEFENDER: Sydney is interested in Hawthorn junior defender Sam Frost.

Early this season, the 31-year-old hit a trigger for a one-year contract, but both West Coast star Tom Barrass and unrestricted free agent Josh Battle have agreed to join the Hawks in October.

Frost has been told by Hawthorn that he will have a spot in Sam Mitchell’s back line in 2025, but it will be hard to choose because James Blanck is also about to come back from having surgery on his knee.

Frost had the best season of his career in 2024, but after the win over the Western Bulldogs in the knockout final, a stress fracture was found in his foot. Frost began his career at Greater Western Sydney, where he played 21 games over three seasons. He then went on to play 70 games for Melbourne before joining Hawthorn and playing 90 games for them.

Even though Frost turned 31 at the end of the month, he is still fit and skilled enough to play in the AFL for a few more years.

Sydney bought Joel Hamling in October of last year to help out in defense, but the West Australian has been used as a forward in the VFL. When Tom McCartin or Dane Rampe gets hurt, former top-10 pick Aaron Francis steps in as a down back.

They are also thought to be interested in Frost to help make up for the loss of Battle.
