Each and every child should have the chance to develop a passion for various sports. As a result, I am speaking up in order to save it.
It was in the run-up to the federal election in 2007, and John Howard’s campaign route took him to the small hamlet where I had spent my childhood.
While I was in the sixth grade, I had the privilege of seeing the Prime Minister and even having the opportunity to ask him a question. I was a member of our student council. However, it was not my experience in elementary school that kindled my interest in engaging in political activities. There was not a single instance that made it very evident that I ought to argue for what I consider to be the correctness.
To my knowledge, it has always been present. Some of it is due to the fact that I spent my childhood in Tasmania and then moved to Perth in order to play football.
Both of these locations are renowned for their breathtakingly beautiful coastlines and forests, and as I’ve grown older and had the opportunity to explore the world, I’ve come to appreciate how unique and remarkable they are.
When I was a child, I made the mistake of taking our wildness for granted because I was surrounded by it. Now, whenever I travel back to Tasmania, I can’t wait to spend some time there before I leave again. My most recent visit to that location was when I went on a walk by myself in Cradle Mountain National Park, which is currently being engulfed by a blaze at the time of this writing.
I am of Indigenous descent, and my ancestry can be traced back to the leaders of Tasmania during the time of colonisation. Because of this connection to the land, I have a strong love for natural locations, particularly the Huon Pine trees that are thousands of years old and can be found along the north-west coast of Tasmania to this day.
In this country, there are a great number of places that deserve to be proud of. Because of this, it is not surprising that we are driven to safeguard them and to do everything in our power to ensure that future generations have the same opportunity to fall in love with them as we have.
One of the challenges I’ve had is learning how to use my voice. However, the more I’ve thought about it, the fundamental nature of politics is that it is open to everyone.
In a democratic system, everyone has a voice. The decisions that our leaders make have an impact on all of us, and we need to have the right to voice our opinions. Mr. Howard, what are your plans to address the issue of the environment and the fight against the phenomenon of global warming?
Members of the Australian Football League (AFL) are concerned about the environment. However, the transition from being concerned about it to being aware of what to do can be a difficult one.
Everyone who plays football is entirely focused on their performance, on making the most of the amazing opportunity that has been presented to them, and on doing everything in their power to assist their teams in achieving success.
It’s not just my industry that faces these kinds of pressures. Every one of us has a unique set of priorities, and even if we do manage to devote some of our time to causes that we are passionate about, we may still feel as though our voices will not be heard.
In the near future, a piece of legislation will be presented to the Australian parliament that will request that our leaders take into consideration the health and well-being of future generations when making decisions.
It is called the Duty of Care Bill, and it requests that the government consider the effects that their actions would have on children living in the present as well as children who will live in the future.
It is a measure that will allow young people to participate in significant issues that are relevant to them, and that is the reason why I am joining hundreds of athletes from a variety of codes and sports to support a duty of care.
I want the children of the future to have the same chance to develop a passion for football as I did. I want them to have the same opportunity that I did. to avoid having games cancelled due to severe weather or being unable to train due to the weather.
Recently, the mother of a friend had sent me an item from her scrapbook that was about that particular day while she was in elementary school. When I glanced at the picture of the prime minister with all of us children surrounding him, I quickly recalled the question that I had asked earlier. During high-performance sports, we have a lot of conversations about feedback and being honest with one another.
I believe that it is time to have an open and honest conversation that is based on the facts and the issues, and it is time to establish a middle ground in order to guarantee that every child will have the opportunity to delight in the straightforward pleasure of running onto a pitch and playing on it.
