Captain Bjorn Borg thinks on a voyage that he will always cherish: the Laver Cup.
As the seven-time captain of Team Europe, Bjorn Borg, gets ready to compete in the Laver Cup Berlin 2024, he takes a moment to reflect on his time spent at the competition, which he claims has provided him with some of the most memorable and significant experiences of his life.
According to Borg, who is now 68 years old, “This is the most important week for me every year.” The Swedish tennis veteran stated that he is excited about the possibility of spending time with the top players in the world, including Team World Captain John McEnroe. McEnroe referred to Borg as “one of my greatest rivals and best friends in the world,” despite the fact that their personalities are diametrically opposed.
The eleven-time Grand Slam champion, Borg, who led Team Europe to victory at the first four editions of the Laver Cup but was delivered the blow of defeat at London 2022 and Vancouver 2023, said, “I’m still hurt after the last two years, I’m suffering a lot.” Borg’s statement was made in reference to the fact that he is feeling a great deal of pain.
Observing that McEnroe and Borg have a mutual regard for one another, Borg observed, “I see he wants to win so badly.” In addition, he stated, “I want to win so badly that my team is going to be up and ready.” In response to a question about what he anticipates happening this week, the former world number one joked that he is “very confident” before reversing his confidence.
It was Borg who stated, “We have a good chance.” I believe that it is time for Europe to emerge victorious in Berlin.
The amount of skill that is there on both teams was acknowledged by him when he stated, “It’s going to be great tennis, close matches.” “We are hoping to bring it back, and it is going to stay in Europe,” he stated, referring to the trophy that was awarded for the Laver Cup.
Borg continued by saying, “You are going to see pretty good tennis, and I am looking forward to it.” “We are aware of what to do.”
The Swede remarked that the experience of playing in the Laver Cup, which has taken him to places such as Chicago, Prague, Geneva, Boston, London, Vancouver, and now Berlin, has been incredible. He recalled Roger Federer’s retirement in 2022 as a particularly significant milestone in his career.
According to Borg, “We were all filled with emotion, and everybody was crying.” “It was a proud moment to be a part of that,” she said.
“To be a part of this team, to know these guys, it’s a pleasure for me,” said Borg, who has cherished the opportunity to share stories and recollections with Europe’s best players during team dinners during the course of his career.
