With a 42–point win over a poor Collingwood team at Victoria Park, the Western Bulldogs got their first win under new coach Tam Hyett.

The Pies, who had two extra players in their 21-person squad, got off to a good start but didn’t make many shots after that. The Dogs, on the other hand, gained confidence and connection as the game went on, and they won 9.3 (57) to 2.3 (15).

It means Collingwood still hasn’t won a game under new coach Sam Wright. After five games, the team is on track for its worst AFLW start ever, which was 0-6 in 2019 under Wayne Siekman.

Eliza James, a small forward for Collingwood, had only scored one goal in four games this year. But she got the Pies off to a great start in the first term by making the first major 30 seconds after the first bounce and the last 30 seconds before halftime. For most of the season, Jess Fitzgerald played in the middle of the field instead of at halfback, where she usually plays. This was because superstar Ellie Blackburn was hurt and couldn’t play. In the end, she had 15 touches and scored two goals.

The Pies controlled play in the first quarter, but the Dogs settled down in the second and had a lot more of the ball (though their passing was shaky at times). They put a lot of pressure on the Pies defensively across the field and scored three goals in the second quarter.
