Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier passed away at the age of 73.


Tragically, the former manager of Liverpool, who coached France, Lyon, and PSG during his illustrious career, has passed away. He was at Anfield for six years.

The 73-year-old former manager of Liverpool, Gerard Houllier, passed away.

The Frenchman, who played for six years at Anfield, died a few days after undergoing a heart procedure in Paris; he had only arrived back home on Sunday.

Initial confirmation of the news came from RMC and L’Equipe in France.

Presenter of Match of the Day Gary Lineker immediately expressed gratitude on social media, writing: “Oh no! There is no longer a Gerard Houllier. One of the most intelligent, kind, and charming people in football.

Michael Owen, who trained under Houllier for six years at Anfield and won the 2001 Ballon d’Or, described himself as “absolutely heartbroken.”

“A great manager and a genuinely caring man,” was how he described Houllier.

Houllier first arrived at Anfield in July 1998, joining the team as co-manager with Roy Evans. Houllier had great success in France with Lens, PSG, and the national youth setup. He is particularly known for his contribution to Clairefontaine’s rise in the 1990s and the development of several Les Bleus World Cup winners, including Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet.
