Bjorn Borg delivers ‘gruelling’ verdict as he compares his era of tennis to current stars
Bjorn Borg has stated that tennis in the modern era is more “grueling” than it was during his playing career. He has also acknowledged that current stars have a “big responsibility” to promote the sport.
Over the course of his playing career, Borg was ranked number one in the world for 109 weeks and won 11 Grand Slam singles titles. He is considered to be one of the most popular players in the history of the sport.
In the years following his retirement, the Swedish legend generally avoided the sport of tennis. However, he has been the captain of squad Europe at the Laver Cup since 2017, and he will be leading the squad for the very last time in 2024.
During an interview with the New York Times, the 68-year-old football player confessed that the way players play nowadays is more difficult than it was during his time. He also applauded current stars for their willingness to accept the role they play in the expansion of the sport.
As he put it, “They hit the ball with more force.” Having to play in the manner in which they do is a lot more taxing.
Moreover, there is the television component to it. They are quite well known. They have a significant amount of responsibility because tennis has grown to become one of the most popular sports in the world. They are tasked with motivating individuals and promoting the sport.
The situation is different if you are a star in the sport of football. It is not necessary for you to market your sport. If we are to talk about their fame, then it is safe to assume that they are doing an excellent job.
It is common knowledge among them that no single player is more important than the sport as a whole.
News Regarding the Laver Cup
During the Laver Cup, Carlos Alcaraz’s naiveté during his younger years was exposed, and Grigor Dimitrov was instructed to “get naked.”
In a Grand Slam snub, Stefanos Tsitsipas makes a bold declaration that he is “excited” about the Laver Cup.
After a career that included six French Open wins and five Wimbledon titles, Borg withdrew from the sport at the young age of 26. The choice to leave was mostly influenced by mental exhaustion, which was a significant role in his decision.
When Borg was playing, he did not have an entourage like he does today. Instead, he frequently traveled with his coach by his side. This was one of the most significant distinctions between his playing career and his current one.
In today’s world, famous tennis players on the ATP and WTA circuits typically travel with hitting partners, physiotherapists, and psychologists during their matches.
The Swedish player continued by saying, “They have the big teams surrounding them, and these people are doing an incredible job right now.”
I did okay, even if I quit too early, but I never had that large of a team of people to go around the world with that makes you feel so supported. I did okay.
Before everyone else, I was the first person to actually travel with a coach. Everyone in today’s world has a coach, a physiotherapist, and a whole host of other individuals. The sport of tennis is extremely difficult to play.
“Because you are basically out there by yourself, it is really a challenging situation. Therefore, you are in desperate need of that.”
