After scoring in Manchester United’s thrilling FA Cup victory over Liverpool, Antony was not thrilled to be called upon to cover for left-back during extra time.

After Erik ten Hag asked Antony to play left-back for Manchester United before Marcus Rashford had to step in, Antony seemed incensed.

The Red Devils scored the game’s seventh goal in stoppage time of extra time to secure an incredible 4-3 FA Cup victory over Liverpool. Four minutes remaining in the ninety minutes, Antony’s goal tied the score at two and sent the match into overtime.

As United attempted to equalize in normal time, Ten Hag substituted a plethora of attacking players, leaving them with a top-heavy squad. The Dutchman was forced to rearrange his starting lineup and assign players to odd positions as a result, which led to Antony playing left back.

The Brazilian was visibly shocked and made hand gestures as he exited the team huddle. Before the forward grabbed his teammate and seemed to give some advice, encouraging Antony to do a job for the team, he went off and vented at Rashford.

Ten Hag, who was clearly frustrated, nevertheless complimented Antony, who has had difficulty making an impact on games this season, and even emphasized how well he played defense as United managed to get by with a makeshift backline that ultimately included Bruno Fernandes.

“It’s very important for him,” he said to beIN Sports. He had such difficulty. First of all, he was not himself, and that is his fault. He eventually lost confidence, so he must now fight back. He has been back for the past two weeks, as we can see. In training, I see the same Antony that I worked with during my time at Ajax and during my initial weeks here.

“You’ve seen that objective, so he needs to fight back, and I have no doubt that he will. Not just in the aim, though. When he assumes the left full-back position, he plays excellent defense. He is able to play from that side in some systems. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not a defending player because he can score goals.”

As Ten Hag’s team looks to advance to consecutive FA Cup finals, United will now take on Coventry City in the semi-finals. Despite an uneven season, the Dutchman thinks Liverpool’s victory could mark a turning point.

“Every team needs those moments early in the season, and we never had that moment,” he stated. This could be the turning point where the group truly finds the motivation and belief to accomplish incredible things. And in my opinion, you can defeat any opponent when you can defeat Liverpool in the manner that we did. We must thus demonstrate that point. And I added that we did it today as well as on Friday.”
