Over the weekend, a fire at a Collingwood homeless encampment destroyed one tent and everything inside of it.

On Sunday, September 15, just before 11 a.m., the Collingwood Fire Department, Simcoe County Paramedics, and Collingwood-The Blue Mountains OPP were called to a reported grass fire off Mountain Road.

Many individuals reported seeing fire, and it was discovered that there was a tent burning on the side of the road in the woods.

No one was inside the tent when it caught fire and was put out, according to Fire Chief Dan Thurman.

The location is remote from the road and inaccessible to fire engines and hoses, so firefighters did face difficulties getting there. To put out the fire, which was contained to the tent and wood pallet it was on, the crews brought in extinguishers.

Since the tent and everything inside burnt and melted, the source of the fire is unknown.

According to Thurman, if the other residents were unable to obtain a smoke alarm for themselves, the fire department staff did encourage them to visit the fire station.

“One person did stop by to get one, and even though it’s a tent, it still helps,” Thurman said.

After arriving on the scene for approximately an hour, firemen who were not on duty were called in to operate the fire station while the crew dealt with the tent fire.
