When you think of the best player to have ever played for Manchester United, one name that will eternally come up in conversation is the late great Sir Bobby Charlton. The World and European Cup winner is as significant a character at Old Trafford as there ever has been, with a stand named after him and a statue outside the stadium in his honour.

At one point in time, Charlton was the club’s all-time appearance and goalscorer, and he would be featured in any ultimate Red Devils XI. He also held the record for most goals scored by a player. Furthermore, in the year 2007, he was requested to identify his very own all-time greats for Manchester United.

The likes of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, and even Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs had not yet properly established themselves as elite players for Manchester United at that time. They still had a lot of work to do before they could be considered a part of that heritage. Therefore, the team that Charlton assembled was lacking in a great number of stars who, in today’s world, would most certainly be at the head of the competition. In spite of this, the XI continues to be loaded with world-class talent that, without a doubt, would have given anyone a run for their money without question. Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Nobby Stiles, Gary Pallister, and Denis Irwin are selected to play custodian and defender, respectively.

In the year 2007, the decision to put Peter Schmeichel in the position of goalkeeper for Manchester United was a relatively straightforward one. Schmeichel is the seemingly undisputed king of goalkeepers for Manchester United. At that time, the Great Dane did not face any competition from Edwin van der Sar, who had only been with the club for two years at that point, and David de Gea would have been a child at that point in time. However, despite the fact that other players, such as Alex Stepney and Harry Gregg, had also had fantastic histories, Schmeichel was still the best of them all.

The defensive flanks are occupied by Gary Neville and Denis Irwin, a situation that would most certainly continue to be the case even if the team were selected in the year 2025, let alone in the year 2007. In the midfield, players such as Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand had not yet earned the right to compete, but Gary Pallister still prevailed over players such as Steve Bruce and Jaap Stam. Nobby Stiles, who was better renowned as a tough-tackling, hardman midfielder but could also play in defence and who shone alongside Charlton for both club and country, joined him. Stiles was brought in to play alongside Charlton.
