Premier League action mooted after Aston Villa player exits club

Don Goodman is doubtful that Premier League teams will support change in the wake of Aston Villa’s loan of Lewis Dobbin to West Brom.  Due to the circumstances surrounding the transfer, there were concerns raised about the July deal to sign Dobbin from Everton, with Tim Iroegbunam going the opposite way.

Villa quickly loaned the young player to West Brom, a rival team in the West Midlands, for the balance of the 2024–25 season.

There is no denying that the move was made to avoid PSR, but Goodman maintains that Villa and Everton are not to accountable for it.

He told Villa News that “some of these fees being paid for academy graduates are way, way over the top.” It is impossible to avoid the feeling that the main motivation is to support clubs financially, particularly with regard to Profit and Sustainability Rules.

“If that’s a real weakness, then the Premier League is to blame. If there is a vulnerability that can be taken advantage of, as it has been, then the clubs that abstained from voting for reform should bear the blame rather than Aston Villa.

The fact that 14 clubs haven’t pressured the Premier League to slightly alter the £105 million cap that can be lost over a three-year period astounds me.

It’s obvious that most Premier League clubs are having trouble with it, but they do have the ability to alter it if they so choose, and they may now do so. However, clubs still have ways to strengthen their financial statements, so why wouldn’t they take advantage of that?

Smart move by Aston Villa to sign Lewis Dobbin
In a perfect world, Villa could have approached their business in a different manner, but they have been very astute in their summertime transfer activity.

It makes sense in the long run to loan Dobbin to a Championship club, where he should start reasonably often, as he was obviously not signed to fit into the first squad.

It’s undeniable that the £9 million agreement with Everton was made to assist balance the books because £10 million went to Iroegbunam.

The money will appear on the spreadsheets as pure profit, which indicates that the Villans will receive some relief. However, the PSR position as a whole is absurd.

Although clubs have not yet opted to request that the Premier League investigate the £105 million amount, this will undoubtedly alter in the near future. Teams cannot be held accountable for going above and above to prevent rules violations until that time.
