I am going to begin the new season with some new objectives, and I am already looking forward to achieving them. To put in a lot of practice time with Wim, we haven’t had much time. Therefore, it is going to be good to give that a shot,” she stated. There are some players who have made winning the WTA Finals appear like a walk in the park, despite the fact that it is one of the most difficult feats in the sport of tennis.

There have been seven women who have been able to successfully win the championship and then successfully defend it twelve months after it was first awarded. This is an outstanding feat considering the event’s long history.

In light of the fact that Iga Swiatek looks to make it eight in 2024, we take a look at the all-time greats who have accomplished that extraordinary achievement.

Since 1972–1973, Chris Evert
World No. 1 in the past Evert was the first woman to successfully defend her title once she had won the WTA Finals. She was also the first woman to win the tournament.

At the very first competition, which took place in 1972, the American won the championship by prevailing over the Australian Kerry Melville in a match that was won in straight sets.

After a year had passed, Evert, who was still a teenager at the time, triumphed against Nancy Richey, another native of the United States, to win the championship for the second year in a row.

She went on to win further titles in the years 1975 and 1977.

Since 1978–1979 and 1983–1986: Martina Navratilova
The number of eight WTA Finals singles titles that Navratilova has won is unmatched by any other woman in the history of tennis, and the tennis legend has successfully defended her title on several occasions.

In 1978, she won her first title by defeating Evonne Goolagong, and the following year, she won her second title by defeating Tracy Austin, so making it back-to-back victories for her.

After achieving yet another victory in 1981, Navratilova went on to win an astounding five straight year-end championships to finish her career.

After claiming victory over Evert in the finals of 1983 and 1984, the American athlete went on to triumph over Helena Sukova, Hana Mandlikova, and Steffi Graf in the finals of 1985, 1986 (March), and 1986 (November), respectively.

Between the years 1990 and 1992, Monica Seles
Seles was the most dominant force in the early 1990s, and throughout her career, she won three WTA Finals. Significantly, all three of her victories came in a row.

Seles became the youngest champion in the history of the tournament when she won it for the first time in 1990 by defeating Gabriela Sabatini in five sets. She continues to hold this record to this day.

The former world number one then went on to win the championship match against Navratilova in consecutive years, 1991 and 1992, thereby completing an astounding “threepeat.”
