The Red Sox are in line to sign an ex-Yankees superstar for $48 million. Could they get him?

It will be hard for the Boston Red Sox to decide what to do this winter.

For the second straight offseason, Boston needs to add more help to the starting staff. Lucas Giolito was signed by the Red Sox in the off-season, but he couldn’t play in 2024. He is set to come back in 2025, which will be great for Boston.

But the Red Sox will need to get at least one more starting. Boston will have a lot of money to spend, but since free agency is still a few months away, it’s not clear who they will go after. There will be a wide range of players with different prices. Boston has a lot of cash, but it’s not clear if it will spend it all.

If the Red Sox really want to spend a lot of money on an ace, Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles is the best choice. If they want to make a cheaper move, Luis Severino, a star pitcher who used to play for the Yankees and now for the Mets, might be the best choice.

This year, Severino has really come back. He has made 30 starts for the Mets and has a 3.79 earned run average. They’ve had a good look at him over the past year as he played for the Yankees and even against him in 2024 when he was with the Mets. Before the Mets, the Red Sox were interested in him but couldn’t make a deal.

Severino will likely get a deal worth $48 million spread out over four years. He is only 30 years old. Would the Red Sox be able to get their old foe early this winter? It sounds like the end of one Boston Red Sox star’s time with the team.

Boston got the best closer in Major League Baseball when they signed Kenley Jansen before the 2023 season. He has been everything the team could have asked for. He has been great the last two years and was even named to the All-Star team. The Red Sox really needed a reliable, top-notch closer at the end of games, and Jansen gave them that.

He might not play in another game with the team, though. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com says that Jansen will be shut down and put on the Injured List, which will end his 2024 season.

“Barring a surprise, Kenley Jansen’s second — and potentially final — season in a Red Sox uniform is over,” said Cotillo. “Hours after Jansen said that his scoreless ninth inning in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Twins would be his last start of 2024, manager Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen will likely be out for the rest of the regular season.”

“The Red Sox are expected to place him on the injured list before Monday’s series opener in Toronto; it’s unknown who will take his place on the active roster.”

In the last two seasons, Jansen has played in 105 games for Boston and has a 3.44 earned run average and 56 saves. He did a great job in his role, but there is already a lot of talk that he will sign with another team this winter.
